Canadian Passport

A Canadian passport is the only reliable and universally accepted travel and identification document for Canadians who travel abroad.

How to apply for a Passport

  1. Fill out an interactive form (PPTC 153A) or form PPTC 040 for Canadians living abroad.

    As you fill out the form, the information is stored in a bar code which can be scanned and read by Passport Canada Agents. Print out the form after you complete it.
  2. Forms can also be obtained:

    In Canada at:

    • Passport Canada
    • Canada Post
    • Service Canada

    Outside Canada at:

    • Canadian Embassies
    • Canadian High Commissions
    • Canadian Consulates (except those headed by HonoraryConsuls).

  3. You must submit proof of citizenship with your Canadian passport application.
  4. If you were born in Canada, you must provide an original of either:

    • a Canadian birth certificate (issued in Canada by the province or territory of your birth),
    • or
    • a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship.

    If you were born outside of Canada, you must provide one of the four Canadian citizenship documents below:

    • Certificate of Canadian citizenship
    • Certificate of Naturalization in Canada
    • Certificate of Retention of Canadian citizenship
    • Certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad

  5. You must submit proof of your identity.
  6. Documentation to support your identity must be issued by a federal, provincial, municipal authority, must be valid and must include the bearer's name and signature.

    For example:

    • Provincial driver's licence
    • Provincial health care card (excluding Alberta and Manitoba)
    • Other provincial identification card
    • Other federal identification card
    • Certificate of Indian Status
    • Old Age Security card
    • Federal, provincial or municipal employee identification card
    • Canadian passport (if still valid)

  7. Submit the appropriate fees with your application.
  8. Two identical photos produced from the same film, or from the same electronic file capturing the digital image, are required for each passport.
  9. You can submit your application either in person or by mail.
  10. Submitting an application by mail

    The use of a certified courier/traceable mail service will reduce the delivery time of your application and help ensure the safety of your documents.

    Submitting an application in person

    • At a Passport Canada office
    • At a Receiving Agent
      • At a participating Canada Post outlet (Please note that an additional $20 fee is applicable to each passport application)
      • At a participating Service Canada Centre

  11. Upon receipt of your passport you should:
    • Verify the accuracy of the information in the passport, especially your personal information. If there are any errors, contact Passport Canada immediately.
    • You are required to sign your name in ink in the space provided on page 3.>/li>Children 11 years of age or over must sign their own passports. Parents must not sign the passport of a child who cannot sign.

    • Complete the section provided on page 4.
    • Enter on page 4 the name of a person to be contacted in case of emergency and keep it up to date.
    • Name someone who would not normally travel with you.
