Expedited Passport
Sometimes it's worth paying the extra money to get an expedited passport. For example, you're planning a trip to Italy and 2 months before you leave, you check your passport. Oops! It expires in 4 months. Put up the extra money and then you won't have to worry whether or not you will have your passport back by the time you leave. Remember, you have to send in your old passport in order to get a new one. They will return the old one along with the new passport. A few things to keep in mind: - Be sure to include your departure date on your application.
- Cost, in addition to regular application fees, is $60 per application plus overnight delivery costs.
Two-way overnight delivery is strongly suggested. - If you submit Form DS-82 Application for a U.S. Passport by Mail by mail - clearly mark "EXPEDITE" on the outside of the envelope.
- Mail your passport application and any required personal documents using a trackable delivery method.
- Additionally, in order to protect the contents of your mailing from the elements throughout the delivery process, mail your passport application and any personal documents using a secure means of packaging, such as a Tyvek envelope.
- You can request expedited passport service for any type of application (e.g., first-time applications, renewals, amendments of existing passports, etc.)
Remember for first-time applications you must go in person. All Passport Agencies accept applications by appointment only. For more information about specific types of applications see:
- Remember, passport applications sent together or at the same time do not necessarily remain together.
- Also, your passport book might be mailed separately from your returned citizenship evidence.
You should make an appointment to be seen at a Regional Passport Agency only if:
- The U.S. passport is needed in less than 2 weeks for international travel
- The U.S. passport is needed within 4 weeks to obtain a foreign visa.
If you have a life or death emergency and you need a passport really fast, you can contact the National Passport Information Center at 1-877-4-USA-PPT (1-877-487-2778). Life or Death Emergencies involve serious illness, injury, or death in your immediate family that require you to travel within 24-48 hours to a country that requires a passport. Customers must appear in person at a passport agency for emergency service and documentation of the emergency may be requested.
