Senior Travel Insurance

Many travel insurance companies don't offer senior travel insurance. Or if they do the prices are expensive. Sometimes as much as 2 or 3 times what they charge younger travelers. With increasing numbers of senior citizens, this practice seems outdated. Healthier lifestyles mean seniors are leading longer and more active lives. Many people are now traveling well into their 80s.

Do you need Travel Insurance?

Consider the following when deciding whether to purchase senior travel insurance:

  • Medicare or Medicaid won't cover your medical expenses when you are in Europe. They only cover expenses incurred while you are in the United States. However, your supplemental insurance might cover you in Europe.
  • Check other current medical insurance policies. Are you covered for emergency medical assistance outside the policy's coverage area?

  • If you prepay part or all of your vacation, you may pay a high cancellation fee or you may lose the entire amount you prepaid.
  • Is your health good? Do you have any pre-existing conditions that might not be covered by senior travel insurance? Could these require you to seek medical assistance in Europe?

Tips for Choosing a Travel Insurance Policy:

  • If you use a travel agent, talk to your agent about what insurance policy is right for you for a particular trip.
  • Contact the U. S. Travel Insurance Association, the Travel Health Insurance Association of Canada or a similar trade association and ask for qualified travel insurance professionals in your area.
  • Make sure your policy covers pre-existing conditions. Not all do.
  • Use an online insurance comparison site, such as InsureMyTrip.com, SquareMouth.com, or WorldTravelCenter.com to help you research coverage and costs.
  • Read the policy carefully. Look for reasons why the policy might not be honored. Make sure you understand everything that is covered and especially what is not covered.
  • Decide what kind and how much coverage you need. Unfortunately, most companies don't offer trip cancellation insurance as a separate plan.
