Travel Clothes

Ideal travel clothes are made from quick drying, breathable, wrinkle-free materials. They can be made of man-made synthetic fibers or natural fibers.

Great Travel Fabrics

Tencel®
Tencel® is a man-made fabric that is soft, breathable, light-weight and wrinkle resistant. Tencel® is made from the cellulose found in wood pulp. Clothes made from Tencel® are comfortable, easy to pack and and dry quickly.

Silk
Silk is light-weight but warm. Great for layering. It doesn't take up much space in your suitcase and it's easy to wash and quick to dry. And it's very strong and lasts a long time.

Light-weight wool
Light-weight wool (cashmere, merino, etc.) works well for winter travel to Europe. It's warm and breathable. You can layer wool sweaters and wool slacks will keep you warm. Wool will work well if you need to dress up a bit to go to that special restaurant or a concert.

Polyester

Polyester tends to be very resilient, easy to wash and quick drying. Polyester is, however, highly flammable so so it's not recommended for wear on airplane flights.

Microfiber

Microfiber material wicks moisture away from the body. Most microfiber clothes feel like cotton, wear like iron, and drip dry very fast. Plus, they generally pack smaller than regular clothes.

Travel Clothes to Reconsider

Jeans

Although you will see alot of tourists in Europe wearing them, jeans are not a great choice for travel. They take up alot of space in your suitcase and they are uncomfortable in hot or damp weather. And they take forever to dry. So leave your jeans at home when you pack light.

To Zip or Not to Zip

Many people really like zipoff pants (pants that you convert to shorts by zipping off the lower leg). These pants save space since you have a pair of shorts as well as your long pants.

They are great for warm climates (Italy, Portugal, Spain, Greece), where you will be visiting cathedrals (no shorts allowed) Wear the pants into the cathedral and after your visit zip off the legs and you have on shorts for the rest of the day.

However, some travelers don't like the way they feel. (The zipper joining the pieces of the leg can be bulky and uncomfortable.) Or look. (They are usually baggy and the zipper is sometimes very noticeable.)
